Sonder And The Art Of Photography

Riffs on technology, marketing & culture

Quick Read: Perspectives can be valuable.  A Kickstarter campaign shows us how to create value out of them while a multi million dollar campaign from a global brand shows us what it can learn from the former.

Sonder is a fascinating word.

It is the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you. (source)

At a fundamental level, Sonder for me is a shift in perspective that makes me cognizant and appreciative of the tens of thounsands of stories unravelling around me, in all their characteristic diversity and profundity.

It’s sonder that makes Street Photography fine art. It’s sonder that makes Vernacular Photography artistic to our eyes.

In fact, it’s sonder that can even help us put a price to perspectives.

When Kristin Lattimer is voted homecoming queen, it seems like another piece of her ideal life has fallen into place. Personality Quizzes

We have all taken a personality quiz and most of these were made by 14 year old girls with way too much time on their hands. The results of these “personality quizzes” were full of pointless jargon that we laughed at. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with these but I am saying that we do not expect to learn more about ourselves or the way we think by taking these quizzes. This is not true all of the time.

I found 16personalityquiz.com the other day and decided to give it a shot. I was blown away by the results. Not only did I find out my personality type, INTP, but they also have a very detailed and elaborate explanation for every aspect of your life. From the way that you think to appropriate jobs to the right romantic partner, this site has everything you didn’t even know you wanted to know about yourself…and then more! It helped explain why I do things a certain way and why I think the way that I do.

For a while now, I have realized that I do not approach problems the same way that other people do and I react differently to things and this makes me stand out. I have never met anyone who approaches things the same way that I do but these results quelled my small fear that I was the only person like this.

INTP is an acronym for Introversion, Intuition, Thinking, Perceiving. Being and Introvert basically means that I would rather stay at home and read a book than go to a party on the weekend. Intuition, Thinking, and Perceiving all point that I place a lot of importance on ideas and knowledge. It also indicates that I am openminded (which I knew already) and am not swayed by subjective things such as feelings as these can be fleeting and misleading. At the bottom of the first page of results (yes, there are PAGES of results) there is a small list of famous people that have been classified to be the same type as you. My list contained Socrates, Rene Descartes, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Dwight D. Eisenhower just to name a few. Talk about a reputation to live up to!! These guys were incredibly influential!

On the list of jobs that it suggested to be a good path were mathematicians, system analysts, and engineers. I had already decided to major in Computer Engineering when I get to college but it was nice to know that I was on the right path.

This brings me to my next point which is that wether you are old or young, you should definitely take this quiz. It can explain why you made certain decisions in the past or it can give you a preview into what type of parent you are going to be if that is still in the future for you. It is a very eye opening experience to undergo and will leave you wanting to continue learning about yourself for more of this innate knowledge. It’s also nice to know that you are not alone.

America’s Education System

I hate school.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I love to learn; however, school is no longer about learning. Faculty members place the emphasis on the amount of questions you answer correctly in a room with a timer and fifteen other kids who don’t care how well you do in the slightest. I will also say that most teachers do not care how you do, either. Truly, care. I attend a private school with “the best teachers around” in our classrooms but I can not recall the last time that one of my teachers made any tangible, evident attempt to help me understand something that I am having difficulty with. Now, if I walked into their classroom during my study hall and they were not teaching a class and asked them a direct question (from homework or something similar) they would be obligated to answer that one question. But, if I am having difficulty understanding a concept or a lesson (not a specific question) they tell me to come back with a more straightforward question. Perhaps they do this to weed out the kids that don’t pay attention in class but still want to look like they are trying. This is not me, though. I have been a studious person for most of my life (I have recently lacked in some categories of my schoolwork because I am finding it hard to subject myself to a system that constantly attacks my self worth) so this can’t be their excuse, not for me at least. Chemistry is a subject that I have had extreme difficulty with this year and the aforementioned situation has happened to me numerous times. This is also prevalent in my Finite Class. I desire to do well in school but can not see the point in teaching myself the subject because my teachers, who are being paid to teach me, are failing at their job and when I try to confront them, they brush me off.

I am fine if you do not agree. Everyone has their own view. This is mine. I do not have a “solution” but I do think that when one comes about it will be revoked because it will turn our school system upside down. And we can’t have change even if it is for the better.*

New

Hello

I am new to this. I would like to put out in the open what I will be publishing on here. I am a lover of many nerd-like things but do not consider myself as a nerd. I love reading but have not read enough books. I am fascinated with games but can not be called a gamer due to the lack of time I put into that hobby of mine. One of my sideline leisure activities is anime watching but I am in no way an otaku (however I do know that word…obviously). Music is one of my favorite things but I am unable to make very much of it with any decent quality.

To put some names to the categories listed above: Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Ready Player One, The Scorpio Races, Fangirl, Pokemon, Harvest Moon, Destiny, Fullmetal Alchemist, Pyscho-Pass, Ouran High School Host Club, Attack on Titan, and I listen to music from every genre so that would take a long time to list.

I would also like to state that I am at the end of my high school career so I will be busy with homework (which is actually what I am supposed to be doing right now) and other such things. I have big ideas for not only myself but also the world. In short, I’m going to change the world. That’s ok, you can laugh. It’s a big claim but I am set on being important, no, crucial to the future. You will here about me in the years to come.

I hope you will give me a chance.
